Abstract
1396962 Tank foundations KAJIMA CORP 24 July 1972 34590/72 Heading EIT [Also in Division G6] A vessel 1, which may be a nuclear reactor concrete pressure vessel or may be a silo, water, gas, or oil tank, includes and is supported by a support arrangement (Fig 3) including three or more radial extending blocks disposed beneath the bottom of the main part of the vessel in symmetrical relation to the central vertical axis thereof, each such block comprising two members 3, 4 connected by a radial shear key 4'. The key 4' enters a complementary groove 3'; an elastic or damping medium 6 is interposed between the surfaces of members 3, 4 such medium being either PTFE, polychloroprene or an oil. The arrangement permits thermal radial expansion and contraction of the main part of the vessel relative to the blocks but prevents horizontal displacement of the main part of a body under the influence of earthquakes. In another embodiment (Figs 4-6, not shown) a greater number of radial blocks, and a central block (7) are provided; the central block may or may not embody the shear key.
