Abstract
This invention ensures that the expansions of a liq. metal cooled reactor are taken to the top of the vessel i.e. away from the large hydrostatic pressures and are so arranged that the alignment of control rod pumps is not affected. The core is supported via a grid direct to the rim of the dished bottom of the vessel which is in turn supported on tangential rollers, springs or other devices which permit expansion of the bottom in radial directions only. The top of the biological shield consists of a removable plug, carrying no auxiliary, surrounded by a fixed ring, carrying all the controls etc. The top of the vertical sides of the vessel turn inwards through a toroid portion to allow the vertical expansions to be taken up by the horizontal portion. Afutehr outward facing toroid brings the vessel walls up to the edge of the removable plug, so sealing the top of the vessel.
