Abstract

1,251,917. Pressure vessel. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 23 March, 1970 [15 April, 1969], No. 14018/70. Heading B1X. [Also in Divisions F3 and F4] In apparatus for hot-isostatically pressing material by a fluid, e.g. argon gas, which acts as the heating and stressing medium, the material is positioned within a working chamber 22, Fig. 1, on a hearth 20 having a peripherally extended shoulder or skirt 28 which supports a bell assembly 10 within the cavity of a pressure vessel 14. A vertical tubular wall 48 and a perforated sleeve 52 aligned therewith between a work-supporting grate 50 and the skirt 28 allows continuous recycling flow of the heating fluid. The bell assembly comprise three nested cup-like liners 36, 38, 40 within a shell or casing 30 which are supported on a ring support 42, Fig. 3, connected to the tubular wall 32 of the shell 30, the lower face of said ring having an annular flange 62 which projects downwardly into resilient thermal insulation, e.g. as best as, to form a knife edge seal. A second knife edge seal is formed by an annular flange 68 on the lower face of a ring 56 which projects laterally inwardly from the shell to overlap the skirt 28 to support the sleeve 52, hearth 50 and the tubular wall 48. The spaces formed between the liners, in operation, contain some working fluid for thermal insulation purposes.
