Abstract

1,166,246. Moulds. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 April, 1967 [12 April, 1966], No. 15999/66. Heading B3F. A mould 1, for use in electroslag refining and having an open curtain water cooling system provided by a header 4, has a trough 3 positioned at the bottom of the mould for receiving the water that includes a barrier 5 surrounding the mould 1 and spaced a distance therefrom to form an annular space 6. Cooling water, which may flow from a water-cooled base member 2, is fed tangentially by pipes 7 and 8 into the space 6 to produce a circulatory and vigorous flow adjacent the bottom of the mould to prevent stagnant water and steam pockets forming. The mould 1 stands on a gasket 3A which is formed towards its inner diameter from a heat-resisting material such as asbestos and towards its outer diameter by a sealing material such as rubber.
