Abstract
The dirty Na is fed in at the top of a vertical cylinder with heat insulation and cooling jackets and flows downwards in the annular gap between the main wall and the outer wall of an inverted double walled cap. Within this cap is an elongated coaxial filter assembly through which the uniformly cooled dirty sodium passes radially inwards from the annular gap between it and the inner wall of the cap. This annular gap is an isothermal zone (120 plus-or-minus 2 degrees C) and within it crystals of Na cpds. with the gaseous impurities are uniformly distributed and may be cleared after deposition in the filter, from a sump at the bottom. Purified Na is extracted from the top of the vessel through an expansion compensator.
