Abstract

PURPOSE: To crystallize aluminum having high purity by immersing a cooling body of which the under surface is coated with a heat insulating material into molten aluminum, and cooling the aluminum while rotating the cooling body.
CONSTITUTION: A cooling body 3 having a hollow revolving shaft 4 is inserted into molten aluminum 2 contained in a crucible 1. A blast pipe 5 of cooling gas of which the bottom end part enters the inside of the body 3 is provided in the shaft 4, and the under surface and upper part of the body 3 are coated with a heat insulating material 6. The molten aluminum 2 is held at temp. close its m. p., and the body 3 is rotated. A cooling gas such as, for example, gaseous nitrogen, is fed into the body 3 through the pipe 5 under controlling in such a manner that the molten aluminum 2 around the body 3 is cooled gradually. The initial crystal of the aluminum having high purity begins to crystallize around the body 3. When a prescribed amount of aluminum crystallizes, the body 3 is withdrawn, and the crystallized high-purity aluminum is recovered.
