Abstract
In a process for separating NH3 from recycle gas in the synthesis of NH3, part of the recycle gas is withdrawn as residual gas, which after being dried and freed from NH3, is expanded in at least one stage with the performance of external work, and after the cooling which is thus effected is brought into heat exchange with at least a portion of precooled recycle gas, an amount of NH3 thereby being separated in liquid phase from the recycle gas. The expanded residual gas may also be brought into heat exchange with the residual gas which is still under the synthesis pressure so that this is cooled to not lower than 0 DEG C., preferably to 2 DEG C., immediately prior to being dried. The residual recycle gas or the whole of the recycle gas prior to the separation of NH3 may be cooled partly with the whole of the NH3-free recycle gas, partly with the whole of the liquid NH3 separated and also in a vaporization cooler, which step may precede or follow the heat exchange with the expanded residual gas.
