Abstract

<FORM:0978578/C4-C5/1> Refrigeration is obtained from a high-pressure liquid ethane stream having a temperature of between 0 DEG and - 150 DEG F. by flashing the stream from a pressure of between 75 and 400 p.s.i.g. to a pressure of 50 and 150 p.s.i.g. in the presence of a cool lighter gaseous stream supplied at a temperature below - 80 DEG F. As shown, the refrigeration is utilized in a process for recovering propylene, ethylene and ethane from a C3-stream from a steamcracking process. The C3-stream is passed into an absorption tower 2 operating at 300 to 600 p.s.i.a. where the C3 components are absorbed by a propylene stream supplied through a line 3, the overhead gases (containing methane, hydrogen and propylene) being passed through a line 19 and condenser 20 to a separator 22. From the separator the overhead gases are expanded through a valve 26 to a pressure of between 50 and 150 p.s.i.g. and are propylene is recovered through a line 29. A liquid ethane stream in a line 49 is then expanded through a valve 50 into the cold overhead gases (methane and H2) leaving the drum 28, the cold mixed gases then passing through line 32 to a heat exchanger 24 to precool the overhead gases before they reach the expansion valve and/or to provide refrigeration where required. The liquid ethane stream is obtained from the de-methanized C3-stream leaving the absorption tower 2 through a line 4 which supplies the stream to a de-ethanizer 9. Part of the propylene leaving the latter through line 10 is returned through line 15 to the overhead stream from the absorber 2 while the C2-stream from the de-ethanizer is passed through a condenser 35 and line 37 to a distillation tower 38 for separation of the ethylene and ethane. Part of the liquid ethane leaving the tower 38 is supplied through line 47 and a cooler 48 to the expansion valve 50 as described above. The cooler 48 may be cooled by the cold mixed gases from line 32.
