Abstract

1435793 Rotary furnaces; preventing admission of air COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 25 Sept 1973 [6 Oct 1972] 44831/73 Heading F4B [Also in Division H5] In a rotary plasma arc furnace comprising a moving enclosure 2 within a stationary enclosure 1, leakage of foreign gas into the moving enclosure is prevented by a chamber 20 and a continuous gas curtain in a gap between a plate 16 attached to the end of the moving enclosure and a means 23 for forming the gas curtain, the plate defining one end of chamber 20. The gas curtain is produced by gas introduced into the gap between toroidal tube 23 and annular concave depression 24 in plate 16 through holes 25. Torus 23 is rigidly mounted on cylinder 22 attached to wall 19 of the stationary enclosure. Cylinder 22, wall 19 and plate 16, define chamber 20. The effectiveness of the gas curtain may be enhanced, either by splines 31 between the holes in tube 23 or by second, radially outer toroidal tube 23<SP>1</SP> with a flexible wall 32 that is inflated by pressure of gas in use, to co-operate with a second annular concave depression 24<SP>1</SP> in plate 16. The gas used for the curtain and which fills chamber 20 may be the process gas or one compatible therewith. The pressure in chamber 20 is maintained above ambient. The toroidal tube may be elliptical in crosssection (Fig. 2b, not shown).
