In a nuclear reactor, in which the coolant gas flows vertically upwards, the internal surface of the pressure vessel, or the top, is protected from the hot gas stream by a heat insulating shield and the vessel external surface is cooled by an air flow stream. As shown, Fig. 2, the internal surface of vessel 1 has a shield 50, mounted below it, consisting of corrugated metal sheets 51, contacting one another on the crests of the corrugations, turning in different directions. The sheets are held between plates 52 and the spaces enclosed between the sheets contain heat insulating gas. The upper, outer surface of the pressure vessel 1, Fig. 1, is cooled by an air current drawn by exhauster 20 through the space between 1 are and the shell 7.
