A reactivity controlling body is immersed in fluid coolant in a guide tube passing through a reactor core and is biased towards a position in the core, but is supported against the bias by coolant flow through the guide tube in a position of less controlling effect. A graphite core 11 has fuel channels 12 and one or more guide tubes 14 through which flows a coolant, such as helium. Upper and lower grids 15, 17 limit movement of the control body 16, in this case a neutron absorbing rod. Minor oscillations in coolant flow will not cause the rod 16 to move significantly, but should the flow be severely reduced or completely stopped, the rod 16 will drop on to the lower guide 17, and shut down the reactor. It is preferable to employ other control rods so that the reactor is not automatically rendered critical by commencing coolant circulation. The invention may also be used in conjunction with water or other liquid cooled reactors. Specification 907,394 is referred to.
