Abstract

1,083,862. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 31, 1965 [June 15, 1964], No. 24792/64. Heading G6C. An integral reactor is liquid cooled and the liquid coolant surface is above both the core and heat exchanger; a heater raises the liquid surface temperature to above the core coolant temperature so that a coolant vapour overpressure is exerted on the main circulating coolant. The coolant is preferably water, which also acts as moderator. The core comprises fuel assemblies 11 of pins of uranium oxide pellets in stainless steel cans. Coolant is circulated by pumps 21 through inlet plenum 19, core, internally of baffle 25, through 25 via ports 32, and through heat exchangers 28. A double-walled insulated tube 34 projects upwardly through plate 31 which defines the upper point reached by the dynamic coolant. Tube 34 defines a column of static water 30 which communicates with the free water surface 36. Twelve electric heaters 43 mounted in thimbles raise the surface 36 to the required temperature. A water spray 48 is actuated for control purposes to reduce the coolant vapour pressure.
