Abstract

In a pressurized water reactor, having control rods movable axially in the core, a transverse flow of water is effected in those regions of the core where there is an excess of moderator material. The departure from nucleate boiling is limited and the enthalpy reduced in high power density regions. The fuel rods, 146, are supported in the grids, 150, together with the tubs 156, which accommodate the control rods 166. The latter are mounted on the spider, 168, within the shroud 178, and when withdrawn to the ends of tubs 156 the presence of water within the tubs causes a power peak to be developed near the tubs. To reduce the entholpy the holes 139, are provided in 156, so as to project water laterally into the region of high power density. In an alternative form, the control rods may have a cruciform cross-section and the coolant cross-flow is introduced from slotted tubs disposed among the fuel rods.
