Class 39(4) In a boiling coolant reactor, coolant vapour is separated by making the coolant rotate inside the reactor; the vapour collects in a central funnel-shaped space. Fig. 1a shows a reactor vessel 1 containing granular fuel suspended in water; make-up water is injected tangentially from space 2. The speeds of rotation and injection are adjusted so that the fuel collects in an annular zone II in which steam is produced. Rotation may be varied in accordance with reactor output. Steam collects in central zone 8 whence it passes through separators 10, and almost pure water flows out at 6 for recirculation. The steam is condensed in heat exchanger 12, radiolytic oxygen and hydrogen are recombined at 18, and gaseous fission products are removed by absorber 20. The fuel dispersion can be drawn off at 23 for separation at 24 and fuel conditioning at 25, the fuel being fed back to zone II. In a heterogeneous reactor, Fig. 2a, fuel 31 surrounds a pipe 30 in which a helical guide 34 produces the desired rotation of the coolant.
