Abstract
884,969. Nuclear fuel elements. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. Aug. 29, 1960 [Sept. 18, 1959], No. 31925/59. Class 39(4) A nuclear fuel element comprises pellets 1 of ceramic fuel enclosed in a cylindrical metal casing 2, the fuel pellets each being formed with recesses into which the casing is deformed so as to prevent axial movement between the pellets and the casing. As shown in Fig. 2, recesses are formed by chamfering the ends 4 of the pellets. In Fig. 3 grooves 6 are provided around the mid portions of the pellets. There may be more than one groove in each pellet or the grooves may be replaced by local recesses into which the casing is dimpled.
