In a reactor using loose fuel bodies, such as balls, and in which a coolant flows up through the mass of fuel in the reactor core, the crosssectional area of the core increases towards the top of the core. The walls of the core may be shaped to provide a constant coolant velocity or to cause a fall in velocity near the top of the core.
