Abstract

835,132. Nuclear fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 10, 1957 [Dec. 19, 1956], No. 38622/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor fuel element consists of a fuel rod surrounded by and spaced from a supporting tube, the space between the rod and tube being evacuated or filled with an inert gas. Distortion of the fuel member does not strain the tube. The materials used are, rod, uranium carbide ; tube, graphite sheathed in beryllium or niobium. The surface of the fuel rod may be shaped to increase the rate of heat transfer and the sheath may be sprayed or plated on to the outer surface of the graphite tube.
