Abstract

823,364. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 8, 1948 [June 25, 1947], No. 16824/47. Class 39(4). A fuel element for a nuclear reactor comprises a plurality of extended bodies containing fissile and/or fertile material, and a common carriage framework of small competitive neutron absorption supporting the bodies in spaced array. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, the element comprises a number of sheathed uranium rods mounted in holes in a block 1 of graphite. As shown in cross-section in Fig. 6, each uranium rod 2a may be enclosed between two thin sheets of aluminium 3, 4. In another arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the uranium rods are U-shaped, both ends of each U being mounted in holes in a graphite block. A row of uranium rods 2b, Fig. 8, may be sheathed within a single pair of aluminium or staniless steel sheets 3a, 4a, and a plurality of such rows may be supported horizontally on sliding racks of tubular steel, Fig. 9 (not shown) ; the racks may if desired be fixed to a graphite sled. Uranium oxide or carbide may be used in place of uranium, or thorium or its compounds may be used as a fertile material.
