Abstract

841,545. Nuclear reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 24, 1958 [Nov. 28, 1957], No. 37094/57. Class 39(4). A fuel element comprises nuclear fuel encased in a silica sheath, the sheathed fuel being contained in a block of solid neutron moderator material. In one arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown), the fuel elements are rods encased in silica sheaths and arranged in a circle in a cylindrical block of graphite. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, the fuel is in the form of rings 13 arranged around a hollow silica rod 15 and spaced apart by moderator rings 19, with a silica sheath 14 surrounding the whole. As shown in Fig. 2, the sheath 14 is contained in a substantially hexagonal block 16 of graphite which is arranged symmetrically with the blocks so as to leave triangular coolant passages 17. The moderator material may be beryllia instead of graphite, and the fuel may be uranium or thorium preferably as a refractory compound such as the carbide and may be mixed with moderating material such as graphite.
