Abstract

989,392. Fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 7, 1963 [Nov. 20, 1962], No. 43817/62. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel element constructed to enable leak tests to be conducted on it comprises nuclear fuel enclosed in a sheath closed by one or more closure members and one or more free spaces at selected positions, said space or spaces being filled with a gas containing a radio-active tracer gas. A fuel rod 1 enclosed in a magnesium sheath 2 has abutting its end a porous insulating disc 5. The can is closed by a screwed-in end plug 3 seal welded at 4. The porous sintered alumina disc contains helium having 0.06% krypton 85 mixed with it. In two further embodiments, the porous insulator may be replaced by a non porous disc having a recessed face to act as a gas pocket (Fig. 2, not shown), or by a perforated disc (Fig. 3, 4, not shown). Testing procedure. The advantage of the invention over previous methods of leak detection is that whereas previously a fuel element which had been stored prior to installation might pass a final leak test because the gas in it had already leaked away, the present invention provides a method of testing which measures the amount of trapped gas which has been retained in the fuel element since manufacture. Two radio-activity signals are measured, one at a position adjacent the end cap, and a second at a point midway along the fuel element. The two readings are subtracted one from the other to cancel the radio-activity signal emmanating from the fuel, and the result is compared with values obtained from other fuel elements stored for a similar time, and with a theoretical optimum value for a leak-free fuel element which is based on the amount of krypton as contained in the fuel element and which takes account of the decay which will have taken place. Specification 897,232 is referred to.
