Abstract
1370928 Nuclear fuel KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 15 Dec 1971 [24 Dec 1970] 58306/71 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel or fertile material comprises uranium oxide and/or thorium oxide together with a metallic oxide which is capable of forming non-volatile compounds with solid fission products at temperatures above 800‹ C.; the metal of the metallic oxide has a low neutron capture cross-section and is present in an amount of more than 1 but not more than 10 atomic percentage. Oxides referred to are aluminium oxide and niobium oxide. In an example, a solution of thorium and uranyl nitrates is mixed with ammonia solution and the precipitate stirred with water, aluminium nitrate, and nitric acid and concentrated to form a sol. Hexamethylene tetramine is added, the sol is introduced as drops into heated petrolatum, and the gel particles are washed, dried, sintered, and coated with pyrolytic carbon.
