Abstract

1468261 Nuclear fuel UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 13 Jan 1975 [25 Jan 1974] 03644/74 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel particle contains fissile and fertile material separated by an internal barrier. As shown, the particle comprises a kernel 4 of fissile material covered by a barrier coating 3 of silicon carbide 3b sandwiched between two pyrocarbon layers 3a, 3c, a coating 5 of fertile material, and an outer fission product retaining coating 6 similar to the coating 3. The fissile material may be an oxide or carbide of U 235, U 233, or Pu 239, and the fertile material an oxide or carbide of Th 232 or U 238. The fissile kernels and the fertile coating 5 may be made porous by mixing the fuel or fertile material with stearic acid binder and then heating to remove the binder. The layers of pyrocarbon and silicon carbide may be applied in a fluidized bed process. The coated particles may be mixed with graphite and resin and pressed into shaped bodies. After use in a nuclear reactor, the particles may be separated from the shaped bodies, crushed to fracture the outer coatings, and the fertile material dissolved out from the coated fissile material.
