Abstract

1375575 Nuclear fuel UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 5 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46758/71 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel body comprises a separatephase mixture of an oxide of U, Pu, or Th with a carbide of Zr or Ti, the mixture being surrounded by a protective coating. For example UO 2 and ZrC may be mixed with stearic acid as a binder and the mixture formed into spheroids, sintered at below 1500‹C. and coated with pyrolytic carbon or SiC. The carbide of Zr or Ti reacts with gaseous oxygen produced during fission, with the formation of oxycarbide. About 0À25 mol. per cent of carbide may be present for each 1% fissions per initial metal atom.
