Abstract
956,530. Nuclear fuel. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. July 27,1962 [July 28, 1961], No.29042/62. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel comprises a mixture containing at least 75% by weight of UO 2 and the balance refractory PuO 2 , at least 80% of the PuO 2 being of size 44-840 microns, and the PuO 2 being not more than 10% soluble in concentrated nitric acid in three hours at 60‹C. The refractory PuO 2 may be prepared by igniting plutonium oxalate, hydroxide, or nitrate and then pyrolizing the oxide at a temperature of 850‹-1450‹C. according to the source of the oxide. PuO 2 powder prepared from the oxalate may be pre-densified by pressing at 60,000 p.s.i. into pellets, pyrolising for two hours at 1450‹C. crushing, and sizing. The UO 2 is preferably prepared from ammonium diuranate. In an example, a mixed powder containing 2% PuO 2 is pressed into pellets at 40,000 to 60,000 p.s.i., sintered at 1450‹C. for two hours in an inert atmosphere and then for 10 minutes in hydrogen. The density of the product may be more than 95% of the theoretical density.
