Abstract

1362786 Nuclear fuel particles UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 11 Aug 1971 [3 Sept 1970] 42329/70 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] Nuclear fuel particles, which have or can be imparted with a voidage region of high porosity, are prepared by agglomerating particulate nuclear fuel material on to a seed. The seed may either be a porous inorganic material which imparts to the particle the voidage region or the seed may be stearic acid, e.g. of size 350 Ám., which imparts to the particle the voidage region on heating at, e.g. 100 C. deg/hr. to 350‹ C. The nuclear fuel particles may then be sintered. Microspheres formed may be ThO2 and/or PuO2 with or without UO2.
