1392602 Nuclear fuel particles UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 17 July 1972 [3 Aug 1971] 36528/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] Spheroidal "green" kernels of nuclear fuel are produced by gradually adding powder containing nuclear fuel and a binder on to rolling seed particles to build up the particle size, weighing a batch of "green" kernels at an intermediate stage and assessing their average weight, continuing the build-up process by adding sufficient powder to increase the average weight to the required value and preferably subjecting the "green" kernels to a heat treatment. Preferably U 3 O 8 powder is mixed with stearic acid, ball milled and then rotated in a gyrating bowl to form seeds, which are built up in size by adding further U 3 O 8 powder and binder. The "green" kernels are heated up to 350‹ C. to remove the binder, then sintered at 1350‹ C. first in vacuo and then in a reducing atmosphere to form porous UO 2 . They may then be coated with a fission product retaining layer in a fluidized bed furnace.
