Abstract
1465172 Uranium oxide and/or carbide KERNFORSCHUNGSANLAGE JULICH GmbH 7 May 1974 [8 May 1973] 20147/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division G6] Spherical particles containing uranium oxide and/or uranium carbide are prepared by introducing, in drop form, an aqueous dropping solution or sol. of uranyl nitrate and/or uranyl chloride containing, per mol. of the uranyl ions in the solution as a result of dissociation, 1 to 3 mol. of ammonium salt and 2 to 6 mol. of urea and also (when carbide is desired) carbon in colloidal form into an organic phase consisting of a ketone or ketone mixture which contains ammonia and has at 20‹ C. a dissolving power for water and not more than 4% by weight and at 20‹ C. a viscosity in the range 0À5 to 2À0 centipoise and located above an aqueous ammonia solution, and the particles formed are collected and sintered (see Specification 1,395,561). One or more of a plutonium salt, an aluminium salt and/or a zirconium salt may also be present in the aqueous dropping solution in such a quantity that the proportion of oxides and/or carbides of plutonium, aluminium and/or zirconium in the particles is up to 20% by weight. The particles may be used as fissile and/or fertile material for nuclear reactors.
