Abstract
1307089 Stable urania-plutonia sols UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION 2 Oct 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 46877/70 Heading C1A Stable, mixed sols of urania and plutonia, wherein the uranium and plutonium are primarily in the + 4 oxidation state, are prepared by heating, e.g. at 80-100‹ C., a urania sol, either before or after mixing a plutonia sol therewith, to produce urania crystallites in the range 55-100 Š and then extracting NO 3 - from the mixed sol until a NO 3 -/(U+Pu) mole ratio of 0À08-0À25 and preferably of 0À1 to 0À15 is obtained, the individual urania and plutonia sols being derived from solvent extraction of aqueous solutions of uranium nitrate and plutonium nitrate. The removal of NO 3 - may be effected with a water-immiscible amine, e.g. 0À3 M-n-lauryltrialkylmethyl amine in dodecane, or an aliphatic alcohol, e.g. 2-ethyl-1-hexanol or n-butanol. The stable, mixed sol may be concentrated to about 1 M by evaporation at 90- 100‹ C. after extraction of nitrate ion. The nitrate-stabilized plutonia sol may be prepared by solvent extraction of a plutonium nitrate solution with a water-immiscible amine, e.g. extraction of a 0À1 M Pu(NO 3 ) 4 /1À0 M HNO 3 solution by 0À2 M n-lauryltrialkylmethyl amine in dodecane.
