Abstract

1312761 Anion deficient actinide salt solutions REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND (STICHTING) 13 Jan 1971 [16 Jan 1970 8 Jan 1971] 1684/71 Heading C1A An anion deficient aqueous solution of a salt of an actinide is prepared by dissolving an oxide of one or more of the metals in a mineral acid and/or a mineral acid salt solution, the volume of solvent being such that the resulting solution is anion deficient. Preferred oxides are UO 2 , U 3 O 8 , and UO 3 and the salt solution may comprise uranyl or thorium nitrate or a mixture, but the dissolution of UO 3 in acid or uranylnitrate solution is specifically disclaimed. U 3 O 8 suitable for dissolution may be obtained by calcining UO 2 at 600-900‹ C. in an oxidizing atmosphere. U 2 O 3 of enhanced solubility is prepared by heating UO 2 to incandescence in an oxidizing atmosphere. The product may be used to prepare fissile material.
