Abstract

High density uranium dioxide spherical particles are prepared by adding 1-5% water to sinterable uranium dioxide powder, tumbling until spherical particles are formed and sintering at at least 1750 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere. The sintering may be carried out by first heating to about 1200 DEG C. and thence to 2000 DEG C. in increments of 200-250 DEG C., the temperature being maintained for at least two hours after each increment. The sinterable uranium dioxide may be prepared by either precipitating ammonium polyuranates from uranyl fluoride solution with excess ammonium ions, converting the precipitate to U3O8 with steam, reducing the U3O8 to UO2 with hydrogen and stabilizing by slight reoxidation, or by precipitating peruranates from uranyl nitrate solution with excess hydrogen peroxide, filtering and calcining the precipitate at 600 DEG C. and reducing the calcined product at 600 DEG C. Specification 937,330 is referred to.
