Abstract
Polythene, in which is incorporated 5 to 50 per cent of its weight of carbon black, is irradiated from high energy sources with e.g. high energy neutrons, gamma rays, X-rays, high energy protons, electrons or helium ions or other radiations which give rise to high energy radiations, e.g. thermal neutrons, to give a product of increased mechanical strength. A dose of 1015-1018 thermal neutrons per square centimetre, for example from a thermal nuclear reactor with a power level of 3-5 megawatts and having a thermal neutron flux of about 1012 thermal neutrons per square centimetre per second for a period of a day, or, alternatively, 0.5 to 500 X 106 Roentgen units of gamma rays may be used. Specification 732,047 is referred to.ALSO:Polythene, in which is incorporated 5 to 50 per cent of its weight of carbon black, is irradiated from high energy sources with e.g. high energy neutrons, gamma rays, X rays, ions or other ionizing radiations which give rise to high energy radiations, e.g. thermal neutrons, to give a product of increased mechanical strength. A dose of 1015-1018 thermal neutrons per square centimetre for example from a thermal nuclear reactor with a power level of 3-5 megawatts and having a thermal neutron flux of about 1012 thermal neutrons per square centimetre per second for a period of a day, or alternatively 0.5 to 500 X 106 Roentgen unit of gamma rays may be used.
