Class 39(4) A nuclear reactor shield is constructed with four layers which, commencing at the innermost, are absorbent to, gamma rays, thermal neutrons, fast neutrons and gamma rays respectively. The first layer is lead, the second boron, the third bitumen and the fourth lead. The second layer may be boron asbestos and the first gamma shield is to absorb the gamma rays produced in the bitumen by the fast neutrons.
