Abstract

Alkanes, alkenes or alkynes having at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule are subjected to the action of a dose of at least 6 units of ionizing radiation which produces a cross-linked product of decreased solubility in organic solvents and increased melting-point. The hydrocarbon is preferably treated with 10 to 30 units, a unit corresponding to 1017 thermal neutrons per square centimetre together with associated high energy neutrons and gamma radiations which unit is equivalent approximately to 50 X 106 roentgens. In examples the hydrocarbon which may be dodecane, tetracosane, tetratriacontane, 9-octacosene, 9-octacosyne, octadecene, decyne, octadecyne and dotriacontene, is irradiated by a thermal nuclear reactor while sealed in a silica tube.ALSO:Alkanes, alkenes or alkynes having at least 10 carbon atoms in the molecule are subjected to the action of a dose of at least 6 units of an ionizing radiation which produces a cross-linked product which has a decreased solubility in organic solvents and an increased melting point. Irradiation may be with high energy neutrons, gamma rays, X-rays, high energy pistons electrons or helium ions. A convenient source of radiations is thermal nuclear reactor operating at about 6 megawatts.
