Abstract

Polyythene film or tape for use in gas-filled electric cables is modified by subjection to high-energy radiation to produce a cross-linked molecular structure. The film or tape may be exposed to high-energy radiation in an atomic pile, to fast electrons produced by a highvoltage accelerator, to radiations emitted by a radio-active source to high energy protons or to hard X-rays. The treated polythene, which assumes a rubber-like nature, shows an increased resistance to hot organic solvents and an increased melting point, being able to withstand a conductor temperature of about 85 DEG C. as against 60 DEG C. for the untreated polythene. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 766,802.
