Abstract

A cable conductor is enclosed in a laminated body built up from insulating strips and permeated with a gel formed by subjecting a liquid organo polysiloxane to high energy irradiation. When the cable is irradiated before sheathing, the impregnant used has a viscosity such that it will be retained in the laminated body until it has been gelled. Alternatively, a temporary or permanent sheath of a kind which does not absorb sufficient radiation to form an effective screen may be applied directly after impregnation. Preferably one or more electron accelerators are used as the radiation source, the beam of high speed electrons having a speed equivalent to not less than IMeV. Alternatively, the radiation may be produced in a nuclear reactor and have an intensity of not less than 1014 thermal neutrons/sq. cm./min., or from X-rays or radio-active isotopes giving a radiation of not less than 1,000 Roentgens/min.
