Abstract
Insulated wires or cables or parts thereof are manufactured by applying a layer of thermoplastic insulating or protecting material, such as polyethylene, polystyrene or a polydimethylsiloxane, in its normal thermoplastic state over a conductor or conductors, in the form and position which it is to occupy in the finished product, and subsequently subjecting it to high energy radiation whereby it is con verted by cross-linking between molecules to a tougher and more elastic condition. The radiation may be produced in an atomic pile, from a gamma-ray source or may be highenergy electrons or X-rays.ALSO:Insulated wires or cables or parts thereof are manufactured by applying a layer of thermoplastic insulating or protecting material, such as polyethylene, polystyrene, a polydimethylsiloxane, or natural rubber, in its normal thermoplastic state over a conductor or conductors, in the form and position which it is to occupy in the finished product, and subsequently subjecting it to high energy radiation whereby it is converted by cross-linking between molecules to a tougher and more elastic condition. The radiation may be produced in an atomic pile, from a gamma-ray source or may be high energy electrons or X-rays.ALSO:Insulated wires or cables or parts thereof are manufactured by applying a layer of natural rubber in its normal thermoplastic state over a conductor or conducters, in the form and position which it is to occupy in the finished product, and subsequently subjecting it to high energy radiation whereby it is converted by cross linking between molecules to a tougher and more elastic condition. The radiation may be produced in an atomic pile, from a gamma-ray source or may be high energy electrons or X-rays.
