To fill the interstices of a stranded conductor 2 it is heated and passed in a rectilinear path through a chamber 1, which contains a thermoplastic or plastic viscous substance under heat and pressure, and where a swelling 5 of the conductor 2 is caused due to a slight compression in passing through a nozzle 4, in such a manner that the compound penetrates the interstices between the strands which then return to their original shape after passing through nozzle 4. A layer of plastic or thermoplastic insulating material 7 may then be applied by extrusion machine 6 to the impregnated conductor.
