Abstract
754,079. Coating electric conductors with thermoplastic insulation. PIRELLI-SOC. PER AZIONI. Nov. 4, 1954 [Jan. 13, 1954], No. 31917/54. Class 87(2) In making submarine telegraph or submarine telephone cable, before the main coating of thermoplastic insulation is applied to the conductor 5 the later is heated and passed rightwards through a chamber 1, through which thermoplastic material flows leftwards under pressure and emerges at 7. The thermoplastic material " washes" the conductor and applies a preliminary thin coating of material thereto. The conductor may be a single solid wire. Alternatively the conductor may be a stranded conductor (swaged or not swaged), in which case 'air bubbles are washed off the conductor and thermoplastic material is forced into the interstices between the strands. The conductor 5 may be 45 mm. in diameter and the bores of the dies 3 and 4 4.7 and 4.6 mm. respectively. The conductor may be heated to a temperature 50-100C. greater than that of the thermoplastic material. The device shown in the drawing (which may be modified in that the screw may be replaced by another impeller, e.g. a gear pump) may be separate from, in series with or part of an extruder or other machine for applying the insulation proper. If the device shown is separate from the second machine the initially-coated conductor is heated a second time before 'passage through the second machine. The material for the " washed' coating may be guttapercha or polyethylene, and the material for the insulator proper may be the same or slightly different.
