Abstract

766,862. Making stranded conductors for electric cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. March 18, 1955, No. 7945/55. Class 87(2). The barrier 2, Fig. 1, of insulating material disposed between the strands 1 of a core for an electric cable is introduced between the strands as the latter are passing through the closing die of the stranding machine. Thus, Fig. 2, as the strands 1 pass through the closing die 3 (the strands being twisted together as they pass through the die : but this is not shown) an extrusion machine 6 forces polythene &c. through a channel 5 in the die into contact with the strands as they are being twisted. In Fig. 5 the tapering entry aperture 4 for the strands is blocked by a rotating plug 9 having holes for the passage of the strands. Fig. 6 shows another die having a lateral entry port 7 for the polythene, and a supplementary die 12 to reduce the angle at which the strands enter the closing die.
