Abstract
1280795 Cables STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 23 March 1971 7544/71 Heading H1A A multiple conductor cable is made by simultaneously screening individual insulated conductors from one another by applying conducting material, possibly metallic tape, around the conductors and laying up the screened conductors. In Fig. 2, a rotatable structure 7 has supply reels 9, loaded with unscreened insulated conductors 10, an additional reel 11 loaded with a wide metallic tape 12, e.g. of copper, and a device 13 by means of which the tape is formed, at least partially, around each of the conductors 10. The screened conductors 14 are then passed through a forming die 21 which serves to form the laid up screened conductors into a cable 15. In Fig. 5 device 13 comprises a truncated cone, in which grooves 17 are provided, the grooves increasing in width and decreasing in depth in the direction away from the apex of the cone. In each groove there is a shaped tape guide member 18 mounted, e.g. by a collar 19 and a screw 20, so that a slot is provided between the guide and groove. As the tape passes through the slots it is formed into a member of star-shaped cross-section (22, Fig. 7, not shown) and an insulated conductor 10 can be dropped into each recess between adjacent arms of this member if the conductor is directed along a path 24.
