Abstract

1,161,879. Coaxial cables. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. 29 Dec., 1966 [30 Dec., 1965; 18 Oct., 1966], Nos. 55227/65 and 46537/66. Heading H1A. An insulated cable core or other flexible core is formed with an outer conductor or screen of a multiplicity of five wires 4 of, e.g., annealed Cu or Al, having a periodically reversing lay, and which is capable of maintaining itself in position on the core, even during bending of the core to a radius of ten times its diameter, without the aid of a binder or covering. The outer conductor may comprise two layers of wires 4 being either out of phase or of opposite phase, or may comprise a single layer applied over a thin metal envelope. A lay plate 3, which may execute simple harmonic motion, is used in conjunction with forming dies 1, 2 to place the wires about the core 7, the wires being fed via a fixed guideplate 5. A rotatable sleeve 6 or reciprocating guide plates, located between the plate 5 and the lay plate, prevent wire entanglement. A spreader may be located adjacent the entrance of the die 1. The finished cable may have an extruded outer insulating layer. Details of the dies and lay reversals are disclosed.
