Abstract

1278219 Coaxial cables STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 28 Jan 1971 3364/71 Heading H1A A coaxial cable has spacer means, comprising a strip of insulating material 1 (Fig. 3) having openings through which the inner conductor 8 passes, which undulates relative to the conductor 8 and has a helical twist. The outer conductor 9 (Fig. 4) is supported by the edges of the strip at the apices of the undulations. The openings can be in the form of holes at equal intervals along the strip, interconnected by slits (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) and the edges of the strip may be curved (Fig. 2, not shown) in order to provide better support for the outer conductor (Fig. 5, not shown). The insulating material may be polyethylene. The cable can be manufactured by employing wire and strip feed means and insulating wire take-up means, the strip feed having a higher feed rate than the wire feed, so that undulations are formed in the strip. The wire is forced through the slits and into the holes and either simultaneously or subsequent to the strip application, the undulating strip is given a helical twist. An outer conductor, e.g. longitudinally welded copper tape, is then formed around the strip.
