Abstract

An overhead power transmission line consisting of a steel core surrounded by aluminium conductors 3 is provided with a plastics sheath 4 the purpose of which is to reduce corona between the conductor and the atmosphere. The conductivity of the plastics sheath may be increased by incorporating metal particles. In the arrangement of Fig. 2 (not shown) the conductor is centrally located in the sheath by radial spacers; in that of Fig. 3 (also not shown) the conductors are embedded in the plastics sheath the supporting steel wires passing through the hollow centre and in that of Fig. 4 (not shown) the supporting and conducting wires are both embedded in the conducting sheath. This last arrangement may be formed as a flat strip and folded to form the hollow conductor.
