Abstract

A self-damping conductor intended for use in overhead transmission lines has a core 10, Fig. 2, loosely contained within a sheath 50 or a core 112, Fig. 9, loosely or tightly contained within a sheath 111 comprised of two spaced layers 113 and 114, the opposed surfaces of core 10 and sheath 50 or of the two layers 113, 114 being formed of a material soft in relation to steel and having a difference in diameter lying within the range of 0À2-6 mins. In Fig. 2 the core 10 consists of one or more steel wires 12 surrounded by aluminium wires 13 and the sheath 50 consists of two touching layers 52, 53 of aluminium wires wound in the same or opposite directions. In a modification, Fig. 3, the sheath (50a) may consist of two layers of round wires (52a, 53a) wound on a tube (70) of extruded plastics material. The core 10 may have an outer metal tube (15, Fig. 4) or consist of circular wires surrounded by a tube formed of truncated sectors (14, Fig. 5) or of large diameter wires (14a, Fig. 6) in which the wires of the core are embedded or of plastics or soft metal (20, Fig. 7). In another modification (Fig. 8), the core consists of an inner steel wire (12f) surrounded by laterally interlocking wires (13f). In Fig. 9, each of the layers 113, 114 is composed of conductors 113a, 114a shaped as shown to provide stable contact. In modifications each layer may consist of alternate round and scalloped section wires (Fig. 10) or wires of various cross-sections to provide circumferential locking (Figs. 11 to 14). It is also mentioned that the entire conductor may consist of layers and that an outer layer of wires may be provided on the outside of layer 113 of Fig. 9 to provide weather protection. In all embodiments the steel core or core members may be replaced by an aluminium alloy core or aluminium alloy core members. The core may be a stranded core of round wires (Fig. 10) e.g. of aluminium alloy.
