Abstract
467,612. Cables. WILLIAMS, A. W. Dec. 21, 1935, No. 35421. [Class 36] A cable has a protective sheath formed of one or more metal strips which are helically wound on the cable with-adjacent turns of the strip in close proximity, there being provided between the strips a channel which is wholly or partially filled with a resilient or compressible tape formed of braided, plaited or interwoven bare wires. The tape may be coated or filled with rubber, asbestos, rubberized asbestos or mixtures of these materials. Fig. 2 shows a portion of a protective sheath consisting of helically applied segmental strips 1 between the turns of which is applied a resilient or compressible tape 3, completely filling the spaces between the strips. The tape 3 may only partially fill the spaces between the turns of the strips 1, or it may extend over the strips so that the outer surface of the sheath is formed entirely of the tape. In a modified construction the metal strips 4 and tape 6 are of the sections shown in Fig. 4. One or more cores of a multicore cable may have a sheath of metal strip and compressible tape, and a common sheath of similar construction may surround the assembled cores. This common sheath may be surrounded by insulation over which is applied an outer conducting sheath.
