Abstract

[Class 36] A flexible cable comprises one or more insulated conductors forming, with or without fillers and/or a covering, a body having an outer surface of rubber over which is disposed a closely fitting non-metallic braided covering. Immediately beneath the braided covering one or more tension-resisting textile cords of substantially circular cross-section are arranged, the cord or cords extending either longitudinally of the cable, or helically about the cable axis with a pitch longer than that of the conductors if these are twisted together. To retain the cords in position, vulcanization, or the final stage thereof, of the rubber forming the outer surface of the body may be carried out after the application of the cords and braid. Fig. 1 shows helically disposed cords 4 arranged between a braided covering 3 and a rubber body 2 in which insulated conductors 1 are embedded. The body 2 may be grooved to receive the cords. In the construction shown in Fig. 3, rubber insulated conductors 5 are enclosed in a braided covering 6 and textile cords 7 are accommodated in the spaces between the conductors and the covering.
