Abstract
547,461. Electric cables. HENLY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO., Ltd., W. T., and WATKINS, W. W. Feb. 27, 1941, No. 2678. [Class 36] A flexible electric power cable has one or more cores round one or more of which, and between two layers of rubber, is disposed a tubular braid formed wholly or in part of strips or cords of non-fibrous material of the non-hygroscopic synthetic plastic type which are flexible, have tensile strength with little extensibility, and do not adhere to the rubber, so that braid has limited freedom of movement. In Fig. 1, the cable has four cores each comprising a flexible conductor 1, a rubber cover 2, a tubular braid 3, and a covering 4, the cores being laid helically around a rubber centre and enclosed in a sheath 5. In Fig. 3, four cores, each comprising a flexible conductor 1 and rubber covering 2, are laid helically around a rubber centre 6 and embedded in a sheath 9 and tubular braid 3 in an outer sheath 5. The covering 4 and sheaths 5, 9, may be of tough rubber, involving heat treatment for vulcanization. In each case, the braid comprises sets of metal wires 7 and sets of strips or cords 8 of synthetic plastic material running in opposite senses round the parts of the cable, and the braids may serve as conductive screens. The synthetic material may comprise polyvinyl esters such as polyvinyl chloride or acetate, or co-polymers thereof, and may be plasticized &c. and are not affected by the temperature required for vulcanizing adjacent rubber layers.
