Abstract

[Class 36.] In a light-current flexible multicore cable having cores consisting of circular conductors of single or stranded wire embedded in separate coverings of insulating material such as extruded rubber, the coverings are so shaped that the cores fit together and entirely fill the cable cross section. The assembled cores are enclosed within a braided covering or armouring which holds the cores lightly together so as to allow relative longitudinal movement. between them. A cable having a circular cross section may be built up of semicircular, quadrantal or other sector-shaped cores, each of which may contain one or more conductors or may serve as packing. Fig. 1 shows a cable comprising two semicircular cores 10 having stranded conductors 9 and being held lightly together about their flat faces by a braiding 20 which may be applied by drawing the assembled cores through a die provided with projecting horns upon which the actual braiding takes place. Fig. 3 shows an oval cable built up of semi-oval cores 11. To prevent relative lateral movement between the cores, co-operating grooves 13 and ribs 14 may be formed on their flat faces, as shown in Fig. 7. The complementary faces of the cores may be curved in the same or opposite directions or may be adapted to enclose a circular core, as shown respectively in Figs. 9 and 10.
