Abstract

[Also in Division H1] A method and apparatus for individually insulating a plurality of electric conductors and twisting them into a pair or a quad involves a rigid non-rotatable frame (not shown) on which are mounted two or four conductor-wire supply reels 1, a central string supply reel 9 (used only when making a quad) and paper supply reels 2, which reels are free to rotate about their own axes. Also mounted on the frame are wire and paper guides 3, conical forming tools 4, closure dies 5, a polishing die 6, and a cotton thread binder 7. On a rotatable frame (not shown) a take-up bobbin is mounted which rotates about its own axis to pull the wires through the apparatus or machine for the insulation process in which an adhesive coated paper tape or plastics/paper laminate is wrapped 1¢ times around the conductor. The twisted conductors are bound by cotton thread from binder 7. In an alternative embodiment, the supply reels are mounted on a rotatable frame or individual rotatable frames mounted on a rigid non-rotatable or rotatable frame and the take-up bobbin is mounted on a non-rotatable frame. The forming tools 4 (Fig. 2, not shown) consist of a metal strip formed into a conically shaped spiral with none of the overlapping turns touching.
