Abstract
463,117. Cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. (Western Electric Co., Inc.) Sept. 27, 1935, No. 26762. [Class 36] To reduce cross-talk between the conductors of a star quad due to asymmetry of the insulation of each conductor along its length and more particularly a quad in which the conductors are insulated with solid material such as wood pulp or polymerized styrene, the insulated conductors are individually twisted about their own axes and then twisted together into quad form, the conductors being bound together, while maintaining their relative positions in the quad unaltered, either before, during, or after the twisting of the conductors together. The pitch of the individual twist of the conductors is preferably substantially the same as the pitch of the conductors in the quad. The quad may be formed on a machine comprising a rotary supply unit 10 and a take-up unit 60, between which are located twist control devices 30, 50 and a serving head 40. The supply unit comprises a frame 13'carrying bobbins 15 from which the insulated conductors are drawn by the take-up unit, the conductors passing successively through dies 21, 34, 54, 65 carried by the frame 13, twist control devices 30, 50 and take-up unit 60 respectively. The serving head 40 wraps a binding 90 about the conductors as they pass between the dies 34, 54. The supply unit and take-up unit are rotated in opposite directions to twist the conductors together, the twisting taking place either before, during, or after the application of the binding according as to the speed and direction of rotation of the dies 34, 54. Pins 35, 55 are provided for preventing rotation of the dies 34, 54 when desired. The individual twist of the conductors may be obtained by providing means for rotating the bobbins 15 about an axis at right angles to their own. Alternatively, the conductors may be pretwisted before winding on the bobbins. The frame 13 may carry a bobbin 14 from which is drawn a thread 70 forming a core for the quad.
